Completed Wall Island with Custom Maple Top

The first project for the kitchen was completed just in time for Thanksgiving.  The island top is made out of solid hard maple glued up on edge grain.  I was very excited to find a source for rough sawn lumber near my office.  The top is ~4ft by 2ft with each board taking on the complete length of the top.  The finish is mineral oil and bees wax so it can be used as our cutting board.

The legs and painted case components are made from poplar for ease of painting.  The legs are comprised of 4 individual boards glued up with a routed chamfer with some hand carving on the edges.  The drawers are solid maple and were my first project with the new Rockler dovetail jig.  Once setup the jig made dovetail drawers pretty straightforward.

It was exciting to finish the first piece of the kitchen!  I would love to build another one of these in the future but have a whole kitchen to reface!
